4 Treatments That Might Be Part of Your Full Mouth Reconstruction
March 29, 2023
When many or all of your teeth need to be rebuilt or replaced, your dentist might recommend a full mouth reconstruction. The goal of the reconstruction process is to restore and improve the appearance, health, and function of your entire smile. The services that make up your treatment plan will depend on your specific needs and goals. To give you an idea of what you can expect, here are 4 procedures that are often part of a full mouth reconstruction.
1. Dental Implant Placement
Oftentimes, one of the most important steps of a full mouth reconstruction is to replace any teeth that are missing. In many cases, that means placing dental implants in your jaw so that they can support crowns, bridges, or dentures. Dental implants can mimic the roots of your missing teeth, giving the restorations they support a high level of stability and chewing power; they can also help prevent bone loss by stimulating the jaw.
2. Fillings and Crowns
Teeth lack the means to repair themselves after extensive decay. As such, a full mouth reconstruction will typically involve restoring any teeth that are suffering from cavities. The kind of restoration you need depends on how severe the damage is. A filling is usually enough for a smaller cavity, but if the tooth in question is badly decayed, a crown might be used instead. Both fillings and crowns can be made from materials that can blend in with your enamel, giving them a very natural appearance.
3. Gum Disease Treatment
Your teeth aren’t the only part of your smile that matters during a full mouth reconstruction. Your dentist will also need to take the health of your gums into account. After all, untreated gum disease is one of the most common causes of tooth loss in adults. Therefore, your treatment plan may include a deep cleaning to address advanced levels of gum disease.
As part of the deep cleaning process, any plaque that has formed beneath your gum tissue will be removed, and the roots of your teeth will be smoothed out to make it harder for bacteria to gather on them in the future.
4. Root Canal Therapy
In cases where a tooth is infected or severely decayed, root canal therapy might be necessary. Leaving an infection alone for too long could give it a chance to spread beyond the roots of your tooth, causing damage in other parts of the mouth. With root canal therapy, your dentist can remove the dead or decayed tissues from the tooth and thoroughly clean the insides so that there aren’t any harmful bacteria remaining. A crown will be placed to reseal and protect the tooth afterward.
The services discussed above are just a few examples of services that can make up a full mouth reconstruction plan. Your dentist will be happy to explain what other options are available at your initial consultation.
